Back at home, Howard remains disgusted with David's behavior. Redman reveals that a suspect has just been apprehended, Joe Elsner, a well-known bookie to whom Art owed money. The following day, Howard is relieved when David agrees to go to Redman's office, but is stunned when David merely asks the district attorney if he can help in any way. Again in a quandary, David asks to have until the next morning to make up his mind.

Ellen immediately insists that a confession would do little good, but only serve to ruin David's life. Ellen comes to David's room and Howard insists she must be told, despite David's reluctance. When David hesitates, however, Howard indicates that it is up to David to decide what action to take. Howard assures David that District Attorney George Redman, a friend of the family, will believe his story and treat David fairly. David grew frightened when Art attacked him with a knife in the parking lot and during the struggle he struck Art with a heavy rock, but had no intention of killing him. David explains that Art was very drunk and made accusations against David about Art's girl friend, Vera Stone. When Howard comes to David's room to ask him whether he had seen Art that evening, he is shocked when David abruptly confesses to the killing. Later after informing Sybil, Howard describes Art's death, as David listens uneasily before retiring to his room in a turmoil of indecision. Later, Howard receives a telephone call regarding Art's murder and privately tells his wife Ellen. Realizing it would look unusual if he avoided their company, David joins his parents and plays cards with Sybil. Eventually he returns home, where he finds his parents entertaining his father Howard's law partner, Donald Muir, and Art's mother Sybil, their neighbor. The film concludes with the entire Selfridge clan, Garry included, living as a happy family.After accidentally killing his best friend, Art Bradley, in self-defense outside of a tavern, law student David Clark flees the scene of the crime. Simon finally reconciles with his daughter and welcomes Garry to their home. Simon calls a doctor, and Garry eventually recovers from his injury. He does not recognize Garry and shoots him, believing him to be an intruder. Before he has a chance to explain the situation, Simon Selfridge returns home. Garry immediately recognizes the ring on the necklace, and realizes that Peggy must be his daughter. She tells him he cannot steal her grandfather's jewels, and offers him Margaret's necklace in exchange. She investigates and discovers Garry in the study as he is in the process of robbing the safe. That night, Peggy is woken by noise in the house. Margaret agrees, and Peggy happily wears the necklace to bed. One evening, Peggy asks if she can borrow her mother's most cherished possession: her wedding ring, which she wears on a chain around her neck.

The Selfridge family decamps to their mansion in Westchester County, New York for the summer. He is reluctant to participate, but finally decides that the money will help him get back on his feet. He does however leave his dog behind to watch over Peggy she becomes immediately attached to him and insists on adopting him.Īnother ex-convict engages Garry to help him commit a burglary.

The police call the Selfridges, but Garry leaves before they arrive to claim Peggy. He quickly becomes fond of her, but he does not recognize her as his daughter, and takes her to the police station. While walking through the city one day, Garry discovers Peggy crying outside a fruit stand, lost and alone. She is involved in a romantic relationship with Garry Homes (Earle), an honest man from a modest background. Margaret Selfridge (Hulette) lives with her affluent father, Simon (Currier) and her Aunt Abigail (Lucy Beamont) in a mansion in New York City.
